Utah School Throws Out Children’s Lunches Because Their Parents Owed Money

Utah School Throws Out Children’s Lunches Because Their Parents Owed Money http://bzfd.it/MAzsTW

I’m sure most of you have heard this story but if you haven’t, allow me to recount.

A school district in Utah had an issue with parents behind on their accounts at one of the elementary schools. So the district assigned someone to take care of it. His solution was that any child who had a zero or negative balance could not get lunch. The problem was that they didn’t know what their balance was until after they got their food. So this guy would stand by the cashier and if the student’s account was too low he would throw the food away and give the child milk and a piece of fruit while public humiliating the child.

Beyond the obvious bullshit this school demonstrated, I find it idiotic that the solution to the issue of the school not getting their money was wasting money. Let me break it down. They wasted the money the school spent on the original meal, the money spent on the extra food, and the money lost by not charging the parents for the meal.

So that is the recap. What I want to point out about the story is the stupid comments people let when the district publicly apologized.

When there are allegations against employees they have to investigate. Rather than fire the employees prematurely before all the facts are known, they go on paid leave during the investigation.

First step should have been coming up with a better system to inform the parents beside trusting an 8-year-old with a note to the parents. When I was that age, most notes ended up crumpled at the bottom of my backpack because I forgot.
